Art song

(Lieder, mélodies and songs)

(pages not yet complete)

The American expression 'art song' usefully describes in English the genre called Lied (German) or mélodie (French). These pages are divided into two main sections:

  • Duets suitable for soprano and tenor

  • Lieder, mélodies and songs for solo voice (in preparation)

The duets link is primarily a listing, because I found it surprisingly difficult to discover the existence of some of these songs, and to source a score. The solo voice pages are not, of course, comprehensive, but rather, a few items which you might not find elsewhere.

In both links you will find texts and translations of some songs, sound samples, and scores of a few songs - for example, out of copyright scores which are hard to obtain, or key transpositions which may be unpublished or hard to get hold of.

I have excluded early music, e.g. Purcell (but I have included Britten's realisations of Purcell), arrangements for two voices (other than by the original composer), parlour songs, operatic arias, cantatas and other religious works.
